Diana Krall, together with the other two black women, Cassandra Wilson and Dee Dee Bridgewate, are the most important females for today's jazz scene.
Krall¡¯s jazz is of great charm. The most important essence of her understanding of music is from the melody. When she intends to interpret and feel the jazz music, people can not help but fall in love with her refined feeling. Her self-playing and self-singing style is the representation of her uniqueness in music.¡£
'Hyphenate'Singer
When Krall paid her first visit to the famous jazz composer JohnnyMandel, she mentioned herself as a singer and pianist. Mandel reacted, 'So you are a hyphenate. Then you are a Singer-pianist or Pianist-singer?¡¯. Well, we can answer it for Krall: the singer Krall needs the accompany of the pianist Krall, and vice versa.
Seemingly invisible potential
Krall went to Berkerly Music School in Boston after she won the scholarship for Vancouver Jazz Music Festival in 1981. In 1983, her performance in the Seattle Outdoor Jazz Festival was noticed by Jeff Hamilton, a famous Drummer in L.A. and WestCoastJazzQuartet. A few weeks later, when Krall's band arrived in the town of Nanaimo, Hamilton took the bassist Ray Brown to watch her performances. Then with Brown and Hamilton¡¯s suggestion, Krall moved to Los Angeles to study with the pianist Jimmy Roweles.
Sing in her own way
'Instead of thinking myself as the legendary outstanding people like Sarah Vaugan or Cassandra Wilson, I choose to sing in my own way.'She said.
