DEXTER GORDON - <CLUBHOUSE>
Recorded in 1965 the day before Gordon’s final Blue Note album “Gettin’ Around,” this session sat in the can for 14 years. The resultant album with Freddie Hubbard, Barry Harris, Bob Cranshaw (replaced by Ben Tucker on track 3) and Billy Higgins has aged well. Gordon does an exceptional job on the Sinatra ballad “I’m A Fool To Want You.” The jazz tunes, most notably Gordon’s “Hanky Panky” and Ben Tucker’s “Devilette” swing with soul. |
