Canadian Northern Lights Quartet Concert

During the 'National Day Golden Week', Canada's well-known jazz band Northern Lights Quartet will be invited to the concert on Oct. 5 at Peking University Centenary Hall. This is the first large-scale jazz performances held by the influential Time Arts Jazz Series after the Beijing 2008 Olympic Games.

From Calgary, Canada, the well-known Northern Lights Quartet is consist of the guitarist Keith Smith, the bassoist John Hyde, Robin Tufts (the percussionist) and Deb Rasmussen (vocals). They are the the most highly-acclaimed musicians in the best-known tourist city. Northern Lights Quartet focuses on the combination of the traditional jazz and contemporary music. With perennial co-operation, their performances expand the music with space and harmony so that people can not help but think of Canada's vast expanse of land.

Northern Lights Quartet is active in the Calgary music scene, at the same time in North America, the British Isles, even Mongolia in Asia. In 2006, Northern Lights Quartet was for the first time invited to participate in the Prairie International Jazz Festival in Ulan Bator, the capital of Mongolian. They did well in combining together the Western jazz improvisation with the Mongolian traditional music, which not only promoted Mongolians¡¯ understanding of jazz, but also spread through the oriental music to the world in the form of jazz music.

In the autumn of 2008, the band will return to Mongolia and participate in the Prairie International Jazz Festival. They will continue to explore and promote the jazz music. Later on, they will be invited in the performances held by the influential Time Arts Jazz

Series, presenting the perfect combination of Northern American jazz and the unique charm of Mongolian music, as a dedication to the jazz fans in Beijing.
